Batch rename files online for free
Give photos, screenshots, PDFs, and project documents consistent names with Little Tagger's free file renamer. Rename multiple files at once, review the original and new filenames side by side, and download the results as a ZIP. Everything runs in your browser, with no software to install, account to create or subscription to buy. Files stay on your device, and the originals remain unchanged. Each batch supports up to 500 individual files and 250 MB in total.
How to rename multiple files at once
- Add your files. Drag them onto the tool or select Choose files.
- Choose your naming rules. Replace text, add text before or after a name, or combine names with numbers and dates. The live preview updates as you make changes.
- Set the order and download. Sort by name, file type, size, or date modified, or drag rows into your preferred order. Select Save Files to save the renamed copies as a ZIP.
Add numbers before or after filenames
Use Name and Index or Name and Counter to number a batch in the order shown. Choose the starting number and its position, then open Advanced to adjust leading zeros, separators, and increments. For example, a three-digit counter and an underscore before the name can turn photo.jpg into 001_photo.jpg. Leave Custom format empty to keep each original name, or enter a shared name for the whole batch.
Reorder files before numbering them
Want a presentation, photo delivery or set of screenshots in a specific sequence? Sort the imported files first, then use the drag handles or move buttons to fine-tune the order. The live preview recalculates numbering as rows move. Numbering follows the list you see, so you can check the sequence before saving.
Replace text, add dates, and clean up names
Remove an unwanted word with Replace text, add a project prefix or version suffix, or use Name and Date to include a timestamp. Advanced mode also lets you change letter case, trim spaces, remove accents, and use each file's modification date. Duplicate or invalid output names are flagged before you download.
- Remove a repeated prefix: replace
draft_with nothing to turndraft_invoice.pdfintoinvoice.pdf. - Name a photo series: enter
Holidayas Custom format, choose Name and Counter, and set three digits with a hyphen separator in Advanced mode to createHoliday-001.jpg,Holiday-002.jpgand so on. - Keep extensions: renaming
photo.jpgchanges its name, not the image format. Extensions stay unchanged unless you explicitly edit them.
File renamer FAQ
Are my files uploaded?
Your browser creates the ZIP on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and your original files stay unchanged.
Will this change my original files?
Your originals stay unchanged. Save Files creates a ZIP archive of copies with the new filenames. Extract the ZIP to use your renamed files.
Which file types can I rename?
You can rename photos, PDFs, documents, videos, audio files, and other individual files. Their contents and file extensions stay the same unless you explicitly change an extension. Changing an extension does not convert the file to another format.
Can I reorder files before adding numbers at the beginning?
Yes. Sort by name, file type, size or modification date, then drag rows or use the move buttons to set the final order. Choose Format, Name and Index or Name and Counter, and set Number position to Before name. Numbering follows the current preview order. Advanced mode lets you adjust leading zeros, separators and increments.
Do I need the Little Tagger Mac app or a subscription?
No. This free batch file renamer runs in a modern web browser with JavaScript enabled. You do not need to install the Mac app, create an account or subscribe. Save Files creates a ZIP locally in your browser; extract it to access the renamed copies.
Can I sort by the date a file was created?
Creation dates are not available through the browser file picker. You can sort by the last-modified timestamp exposed by your browser, or arrange files manually before numbering them.
How many files can I rename at once?
Each batch supports up to 500 files and 250 MB in total. Select individual files rather than folders. For a larger collection, work in smaller batches.
