Finder Tags Not Showing on Mac? How to Fix It

Updated

When Finder tags seem to disappear, the tags are usually still there. More often they're hidden from one view, left out of search, or were removed when a file was copied somewhere that can't store them.

Start by finding out where the tag is missing. Then follow the matching fix below.

First, check whether the tag is really gone

  1. Select the file in Finder and choose File > Get Info.
  2. Look at the tags field at the top of the Info window.
  3. If the tag is listed there, the file still has it. Only the view or search is hiding it.
  4. If the tag is not listed, it was removed from that file or never applied. Jump to tags lost after copying.

Tags missing from the Finder sidebar

  1. In Finder, choose Finder > Settings, then click Tags.
  2. Select the checkbox next to each tag you want in the sidebar.
  3. Drag tags in the list to change their order.

If the whole Tags section is missing, open Finder > Settings > Sidebar and make sure Recent Tags is selected. You can also hover over the Tags heading in the sidebar and click the arrow to expand it. For more on these settings, see how to manage Finder tags.

Tags missing from list or column view

In list view, Finder only shows a Tags column if you turn it on.

  1. Open the folder and switch to list view with View > as List.
  2. Choose View > Show View Options.
  3. Select Tags. Click Use as Defaults if you want the column in every folder.

In icon and column view, a tag appears as a small colored dot next to the file name. A tag with no color shows no dot, so colorless tags can look missing even when they're applied.

Tags not found in Finder search or Spotlight

Finder search and Spotlight both use the Spotlight index. If Get Info shows the tag but searching for it finds nothing, the index may be incomplete or the folder may be excluded.

  1. Search for the tag directly by typing tag: and the tag name, for example tag:Invoices. See how to search by tag.
  2. Open System Settings > Spotlight and check that the folder or drive is not listed under the privacy or exclusion settings.
  3. To rebuild the index for a location, add it to that exclusion list, wait a moment, then remove it again. macOS re-indexes it in the background, which can take a while for large drives.

Tags lost after copying or syncing

Finder tags are stored as file metadata. Some destinations can't keep that metadata, so the copy arrives without tags while the original keeps them.

DestinationWhat to expect
Another folder on a Mac-formatted drive (APFS or Mac OS Extended)Tags are kept.
USB drives or SD cards formatted as exFAT or FAT32Tags may be lost or stored in hidden helper files.
ZIP files, email attachments, chat apps and many uploadsTags are usually removed.
Third-party cloud storage and network drivesDepends on the service or server. Test with one file first.

Before you move a large tagged collection, copy one tagged test file and check it with Get Info.

A tag looks different or appears twice

Finder treats tags with slightly different names as separate tags. For example, “Invoice”, “Invoices” and “invoice ” with a trailing space can all exist. A file tagged with one won't appear when you search for another.

Little Tagger shows how many files use each tag and helps you find similar and near-duplicate tags. You can then merge them so every file ends up with one consistent name. See merge similar tags.

Tags missing in Little Tagger

Little Tagger reads and writes standard Finder tags, so a tag applied in Little Tagger is visible in Finder, and the other way round. If a file or tag doesn't appear in Little Tagger, check that the app has access to the folder and that Subfolders is on when the files are nested.

The Help article on missing files or tags walks through each check.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my Finder tags disappear?

Usually they are only hidden. The sidebar tag may be turned off in Finder Settings > Tags, the Tags column may be hidden in list view, or Spotlight may not have indexed the folder. If Get Info shows no tags, the file was probably copied to a place that doesn't keep macOS tags, such as an exFAT drive, a ZIP file or an email attachment.

How do I show tags in Finder list view?

Open the folder in list view, choose View > Show View Options and select Tags.

Why can't I find files by tag in Spotlight?

Spotlight only finds tags in folders it has indexed. Check that the folder isn't excluded in System Settings > Spotlight. Then search with tag: followed by the exact tag name.
