How to Remove Finder Tags on Mac
Removing a Finder tag never deletes the file. The tag is just a label, and taking it off leaves the file exactly where it is.
There are three different things people mean by removing a tag: taking it off one file, taking it off many files at once, and deleting the tag itself so it disappears everywhere. Each is covered below.
Remove a tag from one file
- Select the file in Finder.
- Open the Tags field with File > Tags, the Control-click menu or the toolbar Tags button.
- Select the tag you want to remove and press Delete.
- Press Return or click outside the field to confirm.
Only the tag is removed. The file stays where it is, with its other tags untouched.
You can also open File > Get Info and edit the tags field at the top of the Info window, which is handy when you want to check the result immediately.
Remove all tags from a file at once
Select one or more files and press Control-0 (zero). This removes every tag from the selection in one step.
Remove a tag from many files at once
- Click the tag in the Finder sidebar, or search for it with tag: followed by the tag name, to see every file that has it.
- Select the files you want to change. Press Command-A to select all of them.
- Choose File > Tags, select the tag in the Tags field and press Delete.
Every selected file loses the tag. Files you didn't select keep it. See how to search files by tag for the different ways to collect tagged files first.
Delete a tag from your Mac entirely
- In Finder, choose Finder > Settings, then click Tags.
- Control-click the tag in the list.
- Choose Delete Tag.
Deleting a tag removes it from every file and folder that had it, and from the sidebar and favorites. The files themselves are never deleted or moved — they simply lose that label.
Hide a tag without deleting it
If you only want less clutter, you don't have to delete anything:
- Sidebar: in Finder > Settings > Tags, deselect the checkbox next to the tag to remove it from the sidebar. The tag stays on your files.
- Favorites: drag the tag out of the favorite area at the bottom of the Tags settings to free up its keyboard shortcut.
Renaming, recoloring and reordering tags is covered in how to manage Finder tags.
Remove tags in Terminal
If you use scripts, Finder tags live in the file's extended attributes. The xattr command can list and remove them:
xattr -p com.apple.metadata:_kMDItemUserTags report.pdf xattr -d com.apple.metadata:_kMDItemUserTags report.pdf
The xattr command removes all tags at once and works on one file per command, so the Finder methods above are usually easier for everyday cleanup.
Remove tags as part of a routine in Little Tagger
Finder is fine for occasional cleanup. When removing tags is part of a repeated routine — for example clearing a To Review status after each review round — Little Tagger can save the removal as a reusable action.
- A Remove action takes chosen tags off the files you select or filter.
- A Replace action swaps one tag for another, which is useful when retiring an old tag name.
- Saved as a preset, the same removal runs again on the next batch in one step.
See add, remove and replace tags in Help for the details.
