Add, remove, and replace tags

Choose which tags to keep, remove, or replace on files in your workspace.

Last updated: 2026-09-11

Quick answer

Open View > Inspector > Tags, prepare the tags under Selected Tags, and choose an action under Controls. With all three switches off, Little Tagger adds tags. Use Remove Selected Tags, Replace Tags, or Remove All Tags for other changes. Check the target files, choose Manually, and click Apply.

Remove one tag and keep the others

Video walkthrough coming soon. Follow the steps below.

Prepare the files and action

Start with files already in the workspace. For adding files, see Add files and folders to the workspace.

  1. For a one-off action, choose Actions > Clear Selected Preset if a preset or workflow is selected. This clears its selection without deleting it.
  2. Open the execution timing menu beside Apply and choose Manually before preparing the change.
  3. Choose View > List View. Click a file to select it, or hold Command (⌘) while clicking several files.
  4. Review the highlighted files and the selection count at the bottom of the workspace.
  5. Open View > Inspector > Tags.

When intentionally editing a saved preset, keep it selected instead. Changes to its prepared tags and action can update that preset. Clearing its selection first avoids changing it during a one-off task.

Choose the right action

These operations change tags on the target files. They do not delete the files or remove the tag names from your Little Tagger library.

What you needSetting under ControlsWhat happens
Keep existing tags and add moreLeave all three switches off.The prepared tags are added; other existing tags remain.
Remove particular tagsTurn on Remove Selected Tags.Only the prepared tag names are removed. Other tags remain.
Replace the complete tag setTurn on Replace Tags.Existing tags are replaced by the prepared tags.
Leave files with no tagsTurn on Remove All Tags.Every tag on each target file is removed.

For example, a file with Draft and Client A keeps Client A when you remove Draft. Replacing its tags with Reviewed leaves only Reviewed.

Prepare the tag names

  1. Under Selected Tags, remove any names you do not want in this action using their Remove Tag (×) buttons. Actions > Clear Tags empties the whole prepared selection.
  2. Click Enter or search tags... and type a name.
  3. Click an existing match. For a new name with no matching suggestion, press Return to create and select it.
  4. Check the selected name and repeat for any other tags needed by the action.

Return accepts a highlighted suggestion when one is present. Always check the names that appear under Selected Tags.

The tags shown here are the names prepared for your next action, not a list of all tags currently on the selected files. Removing a prepared tag with its × button does not remove that tag from a file.

Add tags without removing existing tags

  1. Prepare the tags you want to add.
  2. Under Controls, turn off Remove All Tags, Remove Selected Tags, and Replace Tags.
  3. Check the target files and click Apply, the play-triangle button in the toolbar.
  4. Wait for completion and check the tags displayed with the files.

The prepared tags should now appear alongside the files' existing tags. There is no separate Add Tags switch.

Remove particular tags

  1. Prepare only the tag names you want to remove, such as Draft.
  2. Turn on Remove Selected Tags under Controls.
  3. Check the prepared names and target files, then click Apply.
  4. Check that the unwanted tags have disappeared and the other tags remain.

A file that does not have one of those names has nothing to remove for that name. At least one tag must be prepared for this action.

Replace all existing tags

  1. Prepare the complete set of tags the files should have afterward.
  2. Turn on Replace Tags under Controls.
  3. Check every prepared tag and the target files, then click Apply.
  4. Review the resulting tags on the files.

An empty prepared selection does not mean “remove everything.” Use Remove All Tags for that task.

Remove every tag

  1. Turn on Remove All Tags under Controls. This action does not require prepared tag names.
  2. Check the target files carefully. This removes all their tags, not only names shown under Selected Tags.
  3. Click Apply and wait for completion.
  4. Check that the target files no longer show tags.

When finished, turn Remove All Tags off before preparing an add-tag task.

When the result is not what you expected

A tag is still on the file

Removing its token under Selected Tags only changes the prepared action. To remove it from the file, prepare that name, turn on Remove Selected Tags, and apply the change. Check the spelling against the tag on the file.

A file disappeared after its tags changed

A File Tags filter can stop matching after you add, remove, or replace tags. Clear or change that filter to see the file again. See Find and filter files.

Nothing changed, or the status shows a problem

Check the selected files, active filters, prepared names, and action. If the status reports an access or write problem, inspect the current tags before trying again. See Review results and clear the workspace.
