Organize presets and favorites

Group presets into categories and keep frequently used presets and workflows in Favorites.

Last updated: 2026-09-11

Quick answer

Open Actions > Manage Presets... and select Categories to create categories and assign presets. Use the star beside a preset or workflow in the main sidebar to add it to Favorites. A category assignment or favorite is another way to find the same saved item, not a separate copy.

Organize a preset and add it to Favorites

Video walkthrough coming soon. Follow the steps below.

Create a category

  1. Choose Actions > Manage Presets....
  2. Select Categories at the top of the management window.
  3. Click the New category (+) button beside CATEGORIES.
  4. Type the category name and press Return.

The category appears in the list. Categories organize presets inside Little Tagger; they do not create folders in Finder or groups in the tag library.

To create a subcategory, move the pointer over a custom category and click its Add subcategory (+) button. Enter a name and press Return. You can use two subcategory levels below a top-level category.

Assign presets to one or more categories

  1. In the Categories tab, select All Presets.
  2. Find the presets you want to organize. Use the search field above the list if needed.
  3. Select their checkboxes.
  4. Click Assign to Category.
  5. Click the categories to assign, then close the assignment popover.
  6. Select a category in the left-hand list to check its contents.

A checked category contains all selected presets. A dash means it contains only some of them. Clicking a partially assigned category assigns all selected presets to it; clicking a fully checked category removes that membership.

A preset can belong to several categories. Its name and settings stay shared wherever it appears. Presets without any category appear under Uncategorized.

Rename a category or remove a membership

To rename a custom category, double-click its name in Manage Presets, enter the new name, and press Return. Category names must be nonempty and distinct from other categories at the same level under the same parent.

To remove presets from a category without deleting them:

  1. Select that category in Manage Presets > Categories.
  2. Select the checkboxes beside the presets.
  3. Click Remove from Category.

The presets remain in All Presets and in any other categories. A preset with no remaining category moves to Uncategorized.

Add or remove Favorites

  1. Close Manage Presets with its × button.
  2. In the main sidebar, expand the category or Workflows section containing the item.
  3. Click the star beside the preset or workflow.
  4. Expand Favorites to see the item there.

Click its filled star to remove it from Favorites. This does not delete the preset or workflow, remove its category assignments, or undo tags already applied to files.

Favorite order and shortcuts

Newly favorited items are added after earlier favorites. The first ten favorites have the displayed shortcuts ⌘1 through ⌘9, followed by ⌘0. Additional favorites remain available in the sidebar but do not receive a number shortcut.

Use the order and shortcut captions currently shown in the sidebar. Removing and re-adding an item moves it to the end of the favorites list and can change other items' shortcuts. There is no drag-to-reorder Favorites control in this version.

The Little Tagger status icon in the macOS menu bar also lists favorites when the icon is enabled. Choosing an item there sets or clears its selection; it is not the same action as invoking the app's Favorites command. See Use keyboard shortcuts and the menu bar for the full reference.

Delete a category or preset

Wait for running work to finish and cancel any pending countdown before deleting saved items.

Delete a category

  1. Open Actions > Manage Presets... > Categories.
  2. Move the pointer over the custom category you want to delete.
  3. Click its Delete category trash button.
  4. Check All Presets or Uncategorized to find the remaining presets.

Delete a preset

  1. Close Manage Presets and select the preset in the main sidebar.
  2. Review its use in workflows before deleting it. In Manage Presets > Workflows > All Presets, the membership labels show which workflows contain it.
  3. Return to the main sidebar with that preset selected.
  4. Click Delete selected preset, the trash button at the bottom of the sidebar.

To remove only a workflow entry, use Remove from Workflow instead. The complete workflow procedure is in Create, edit, and run a workflow.

When an item is hard to find

Assign to Category is unavailable

Create at least one custom category and select at least one preset checkbox. Both are needed before you can assign membership.

A preset appears more than once

The same preset can appear in Favorites and several categories. These are shared references, not copies. Rename or edit it once; do not delete it merely to remove one category entry.

A favorite has no shortcut, or its shortcut changed

Check its current position. Only the first ten favorites receive number shortcuts, and changing favorites membership can change that ordering. The sidebar caption is the shortcut to use now.

A category disappeared but the presets remain

That is the expected result of deleting a category. Find its former presets in All Presets, other assigned categories, or Uncategorized.
