Set up folder and volume access

Choose the locations Little Tagger can scan, restore access, or remove a saved location.

Last updated: 2026-09-10

Quick answer

During setup, click Add Location, choose a folder or mounted volume, and click Grant Access. Later, choose Actions > Manage Tags..., open Locations, and use Add Location. Use Re-Grant... for a location that needs access again, or the remove button to remove its saved access.

Add a folder to Locations

Video walkthrough coming soon. Follow the steps below.

Before you grant access

Choose a folder that contains files you intend to tag. A volume is a mounted drive, such as an external disk. Connect the drive and make sure it is available in Finder before selecting it.

macOS limits which files an app can access. Granting a location lets Little Tagger work within that location, subject to the files being available and writable. It does not make every file on your Mac accessible.

Grant access during setup

  1. On the Add Locations screen, click Add Location.
  2. In Choose a folder or volume, select the folder or mounted volume you intend to use.
  3. Click Grant Access.
  4. Check that the location appears in the setup screen. Use Add Another Location for another folder or volume, or continue with setup.

You need at least one location to continue past this setup step. Choosing your entire home folder is easiest if that is where your documents are.

Add a location after setup

  1. In Little Tagger's menu bar, choose Actions > Manage Tags....
  2. Open Locations.
  3. Click Add Location.
  4. Select a folder or mounted volume, then click Grant Access.

If you see Grant folder access for tag management instead of a location list, click Choose Other... to choose a specific folder. Choose Home Folder starts the picker at your home folder. Confirm the location you actually intend to grant.

The saved location appears in the list with its path and an access status.

Scan the locations

In Locations, click Rescan to inspect Finder tags in the saved locations. Wait for the scan to finish, then review the result and any reported issues.

Adding a location and rescanning are separate actions. A scan result reflects the locations and files that could be inspected, not an inventory of every tag on your Mac.

Restore access to a location

  1. Make sure the folder or drive is available in Finder.
  2. Open Actions > Manage Tags... > Locations.
  3. For the affected location, click Re-Grant... when that button is shown.
  4. Select the intended folder or volume again, then click Grant Access.
  5. Check the location's status. Click Rescan to refresh the scan results.

If the problem concerns individual files already in the workspace, use Add Files to choose those files or their folder again. That is separate from managing the saved Locations list.

Remove a saved location

  1. Open Actions > Manage Tags... > Locations.
  2. Find the location and click its minus-in-a-circle button. Its help text is Remove location access.
  3. In Remove Location?, click Remove.

This removes that saved location entry. It does not delete files or undo tags already applied to them.

When access does not work

The folder is already covered by another location

A saved parent folder can include the folder you are trying to add. Review the existing location before adding the same area again. You do not need a separate location entry for each child folder.

An external drive is unavailable

Reconnect the drive and check that its files open in Finder. Return to Locations and use Re-Grant... if access still needs to be restored.

Some files could not be read during a scan

Review the reported issue and check that the affected files are available. Re-grant the intended location when access has expired. Granting a location cannot make a disconnected drive available or turn a read-only file into a writable one.

You granted a location, but the workspace is empty

This is expected until you add files to the workspace. Follow Add files and folders to the workspace.
