Organize tags into groups

Arrange your tag library into groups without changing the tags on your files.

Last updated: 2026-09-11

Quick answer

Open Actions > Manage Tags... > Groups. Click the Add group (+) button, enter a group name, and press Return. Select tags from Uncategorized, Categorized, or an existing group, then choose Assign to Group. A tag can belong to more than one group.

Create a group and assign tags

Video walkthrough coming soon. Follow the steps below.

Create a group

  1. Open Actions > Manage Tags... and choose Groups.
  2. Click Add group (+) above the left-hand group list.
  3. Enter the name in Group name and press Return.

The new group appears in the list. A group organizes tag names inside Little Tagger. It is not a Finder folder and does not move or rename files.

Add tags to the group

  1. Choose the list containing the tags you need. Uncategorized is useful for tags not yet assigned to a custom group.
  2. Search within that list if necessary, then check the tags to assign.
  3. Click Assign to Group at the bottom of the window.
  4. In Assign to groups, select the destination group so it is checked.
  5. Close the popover and select that group to inspect its members.

Assignments save as you change them. A checked destination means all selected tags belong to it; a mixed mark means only some do. Choosing a mixed destination assigns the full selection. You can check several destinations to use the same tag in more than one group.

Understand the built-in lists

ListWhat it shows
SystemRecognized default Finder color tags. This is not a list of every tag.
CategorizedTags assigned to at least one custom group.
UncategorizedTags not assigned to any custom group.
A custom groupTags assigned directly to that group.

These built-in lists cannot be renamed or deleted. A parent group's tag list does not automatically combine all subgroup members.

Add or change a subgroup

To create a subgroup, move the pointer over a custom group and click the folder-with-plus Add subgroup control. Enter the new name and press Return. Groups support a top level and two levels of subgroups.

To move an existing custom group under another one, drag its group row onto the destination group. To return it to the top level, use the Drop here for top level area that appears while dragging. A move that would create a loop or exceed the nesting limit is not allowed.

Double-click a custom group name to rename it, type the replacement name, and press Return. Renaming a group does not rename its tags.

Remove a membership or a group

To remove tag memberships, select the custom group, check the relevant tags, and click Remove from Group. The tags remain in the library and on files. A tag with no remaining custom-group membership appears in Uncategorized.

To delete a custom group, move the pointer over its row and click its trash control after checking the subgroup tree. Do not rely on a second confirmation to catch an accidental click.

Use grouped tags while tagging

Return to the workspace and open View > Inspector > Tags. Expand a group under Groups and choose the tag you need. Review Selected Tags and the current action before clicking Apply.

Selecting a tag from a group prepares it for the current setup. Dragging a tag into the file workspace is a direct add-tag action, so do not use that gesture merely to rearrange groups.

When a group looks empty

Check the search text and whether you selected the parent or the intended subgroup. Choose Categorized to find tags assigned elsewhere, or Uncategorized for tags without memberships. Confirm the assignment rather than creating duplicate tag names.
