Create, rename, and delete tags

Create a tag

1. Open Actions > Manage Tags... and choose General.
2. Clear any checked tag selections so the New Tag controls appear on the right.
3. Enter a name in Tag name.
4. Choose a color for the new tag, or leave it without a color.
5. Click Add.

The tag is now available in Little Tagger's library. Creating it does not apply it to all files. Use Add, remove, and replace tags to apply it to selected files.

Entering an existing equivalent name reuses that tag rather than creating a second entry. Re-entering its name with a different color is not an existing-tag color editor.

Review a tag before changing it

Select exactly one tag in General. The right-hand Tag Detail panel shows its preset use and scanned file use. Use Where Used to inspect examples or reveal a file in Finder.

Tag-management operations use your granted Locations. The files highlighted in the workspace do not limit a rename or deletion here. Connect the relevant volumes and review your locations before starting.

Rename a tag

1. Select one tag in General and click Rename... in its details.
2. In Rename Tag, enter the intended name under New Name.
3. Wait for the file preview to finish. Review Rename Impact, the preset count, and the files shown.
4. Click Start Rename.
5. Wait for completion, check Updated, Skipped, and Failed, then click Done.

If the new name already belongs to another tag, Merge Instead opens the merge flow. See Review and merge similar tags.

A change that differs only in normalized spelling, such as capitalization, may not enable Start Rename. Do not repeatedly create replacement tags to force it; contact support when the required name change is unavailable.

Delete a tag

1. In General, review the tag's file and preset usage.
2. Check only the tag or tags you intend to delete. Clear filters as necessary to inspect the full selection.
3. Click Delete at the bottom of the window.
4. Read the confirmation and click Delete only when the selection is correct.
5. Wait for the result and inspect any reported failures before continuing.

To keep a tag in the library and remove it only from specific files, use the workspace's Remove Selected Tags action instead. To remove only its group assignment, use Remove from Group.

When a change cannot finish

A failed file operation can leave some files changed and others unchanged. Keep the reported message and check the affected locations. Do not assume that closing the window reverses changes.

If Retry Library Sync appears, Little Tagger has an unfinished synchronization between file changes and its library. Reconnect relevant drives and use that recovery control when available. It is not Undo and can resume unfinished work. If it fails again, or the app cannot read a pending repair, contact support before changing more tags or deleting app data.
