Private File Organization on Mac: What Stays Local?
For a file organizer, the useful privacy question is specific: does it need to send your files, names, metadata or contents elsewhere to do its work?
Little Tagger performs tagging locally. Its optional Apple Intelligence suggestions run on-device on supported setups, without sending file information to Little Tagger servers or third-party AI providers.
That describes the app's processing. It does not mean every service used by your Mac is offline.
Separate access, processing and storage
An app needs access to a file before it can work with it. That permission is different from uploading the file.
Little Tagger is sandboxed. You approve the folders and volumes it can access, and you can revoke that access. Tag-library scans and changes are limited by those permissions and the locations available to the app.
Processing is another question: where does the tagging or analysis happen? Little Tagger performs its tagging work on your Mac. Its product overview describes the same on-device boundary for optional suggestions.
Storage is a third question. A file can be processed locally while also sitting in a folder that a separate service synchronizes to the cloud.
What Little Tagger changes
Little Tagger writes Finder tags. It does not move or rename the selected files, and it does not edit their contents as part of tagging.
Presets save reusable tag actions. Workflows run those actions in a chosen order. Tag groups help arrange the vocabulary inside Little Tagger; they do not replace the native tags on the files.
The result remains part of your Mac file workflow rather than a document collection that only Little Tagger can read.
What optional AI means here
On supported setups, Little Tagger uses Apple Intelligence to suggest tags and merges. You review suggestions and decide which ones to apply.
Manual tagging, presets, workflows and core tag management work without those suggestions. You can build a useful system without asking AI to classify anything.
Do not infer that every Mac meeting the app's basic requirements has every AI feature available. Check the download requirements and the availability shown by the app.
This description concerns Little Tagger's use of on-device suggestions. It is not a claim that every Apple Intelligence feature in macOS uses the same processing method.
A synced folder is still a synced folder
If you keep a document in iCloud Drive, Dropbox or another synchronized location, that service may transfer the document according to your settings. Little Tagger does not turn off the service or move the file out of its scope.
The same distinction applies to backups and software you use to share a file. Local tagging does not override those tools.
For sensitive material, consider the whole route: where the file is stored, which apps have permission to read it and which services you have chosen to synchronize or back it up.
An app without an account is not a Mac without network activity
Little Tagger does not require a Little Tagger account. Distribution and purchases still happen through the Mac App Store.
System services, software updates, model availability and the App Store are separate from sending file content to an AI provider. Do not interpret "on-device tagging" as a promise that a network monitor will show no connections anywhere on the Mac.
Website visits are separate too. The website privacy policy covers the website, hosting and contact activity. It should not be treated as a diagram of the app's file-processing behavior.
Local does not mean encrypted
A tag called "Private" is just a label. It does not restrict access, encrypt a file or establish a retention policy.
Keep using the device security, access controls and backup arrangements appropriate for your documents. File organization helps you find material; it is not a substitute for protecting it.
Can I use Little Tagger without AI?
Yes. The core tagging workflow is available without Apple Intelligence suggestions. Use manual tag choices and save repeated actions as presets.
Can Little Tagger see my whole disk?
Not by default. It works within the access you approve. Treat a scan or usage count as information about that accessible scope, not proof about every file on the Mac or on disconnected drives.
